Total French Immersion “Fast Track”
At The CLIC Sherbrooke School
INTRODUCTION
Our «CLIC» schools offer linguistic immersion programs in all modern languages. Moreover, they offer courses in various formats: Private, semi-private, and small groups. These programs can either be taken over an extended schedule during many weeks or in a TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) format.
WHEN
The TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) format is offered at your convenience, all year round. The «CLIC» student learns, lives, breathes, speaks and thinks strictly in French, not at one specific moment of the TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) but every moment of this program.
FORMAT
Whether seeing a play with the teacher or dining at the host family’s house, every thought and all comments are formulated in French during the course of the TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”). From the beginning to the end of this highly intensive linguistic immersion, during outings, classroom interaction, extra-curricular activities, everything is done in French.
IMMERSION CLIENTELE
A «CLIC» student can register for a one week program, a two week program or more of TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) at the most opportune time of the year. This immersion, without a doubt, is ideal for a student thinking very seriously about linguistic development and craving to see quick and positive results through an efficient program.
LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE
It is necessary for the student to take certain placement tests before starting a TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”). Once we have verified the results, a personal program recommendation will be elaborated before the program begins, whether the student is a beginner or coming for a “refresher”.
CONTENTS OF IMMERSIONS
Given the strategic importance of the environment where the « CLIC » student chooses to stay, it is of the utmost importance to have a precise learning profile of the student registered for the TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”). Linguistic proficiency tests enable us to discover our student’s potential before the actual TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) starts. This dimension permits us to guarantee that a linguistic and learning profile of the « CLIC » student exists and further aids his/her development. Consequently, the program will be put in place in relation to the student’s needs, whether business or pleasure, and thereby ensures an efficiency like no other. Furthermore, numerous activities focusing on linguistic development throughout the immersion are selected based on the « CLIC » student’s likes and interests. It is undeniable that a « CLIC » student learns more quickly when he/she likes the activity or task at hand.
LINGUISTIC EVOLUTION DURING THE IMMERSION
A linguistic program like the TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”) takes all linguistic criteria into account which yields a program like no other. We can guarantee that the rhythm is never too fast or too slow; it is built in relation to the speed of assimilation that the « CLIC » student possesses. Step by step through the immersion, we construct a solid linguistic foundation which is neither neglected nor forgotten as the student progresses and solidifies his/her linguistic proficiency. If each and every element has not become an integrated reflex, more time is spent on this particular subject. This ensures that each student optimizes linguistic evolution and further strengthens the foundation which is elaborated during the TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION (“Fast track”).
OBJECTIVE OF THE IMMERSION
The philosophy of developing an integrated reflex guarantees us that the « CLIC » student not only understands well but also speaks well. In fact, it is by speaking that one learns how to speak. Our goal is to ensure our « CLIC » student the most considerable linguistic evolution within the shortest period of time possible during the course of his/her immersion. This linguistic evolution requires the following elements:
- repertoire of vocabulary
- verb structures
- grammar and syntax
- pronunciation
- colloquial expressions
- text comprehension
- oral comprehension
- oral expression
- written expression
DESCRIPTION OF A TYPICAL DAY DURING AN IMMERSION
From eight o’clock in the morning until nine o’clock at night, the schedule of the "CLIC" student throughout his/her immersion is based on his/her rhythm of learning. In fact, assimilation and retention of material are constantly observed during the immersion thus preventing any "overdose" of the French language. Thanks to constant monitoring, we can clearly identify and thus prevent when a student is about to become saturated with the language which limits his/her linguistic evolution. At this point of the immersion, various activities become the focal point of the student’s daily tasks and less emphasis is placed on theory. During the immersion, it is fundamental to focus the learning process and linguistic training on a number of activities and simulations in order to solidify the integrated reflexes in a real life situation. Theory must be put into effect consistently and regularly on the "playing field". Among other things during his/her immersion, the "CLIC" student may be able to do some of the following :
- Visit local business people and discuss with them in French.
- See a news report and comment on it in French.
- Visit a factory, a museum, etc. and ask questions in French.
- Make reservations for any particular activity in French.
- Watch a film or play and discuss it afterwards with the teachers in French.
- Etc.
FOLLOW-UP
It is important to note that each activity is closely followed and monitored by the student’s TOTAL FRENCH IMMERSION ("Fast track") teachers. At the end of the day or early in the morning, the student may have reading to do and/or the completion of certain written exercises based on his/her linguistic development and any weak points that must be remedied. These exercises allow the student to fine-tune all areas while he/she is alone during his/her immersion.
